Academy Program

The Soccer Referee Academy

The Referee Academy programs offered in Nova Scotia are initiatives of the various regional referee committees. Programs are supported, in part, financially by the SNS Referee Development Committee and through instructional and assessment services as requested.

Aim:

The aim of the Referee Academy is to provide member officials with skills that will help them advance to a higher level in their officiating.

To meet this aim, officials are worked closely with on the field of play, in classroom sessions and through email correspondence. Mentoring, coaching, assessment along with video analysis, discussion and educational lectures are methods used to support and guide members to help them meet the desired outcomes. Laws are covered in depth, management skills refined, awareness and foul recognition skills honed and the level of confidence in the referee’s personal ability greatly increased.

Who:

Referees must apply to be included in the Referee Academy. Generally, the members are persons that have had 4 or more years of experience and are ready to move into the area of officiating adult games. Numbers are limited and selection is done on the information placed in the program application. Commitment to the program is paramount. The official must wish to advance as a soccer referee and be willing to commit time to being in attendance at academy training sessions and to be actively officiating.
